individual differences affecting prejudice - culture Flashcards
what did Baldwin suggest?
he suggested that all cultures are somewhat ethnocentric - they believe that their own culture is superior to others
- however some cultures are more prejudice than others
how does prejudice vary in different cultures?
in some cultures, the norm is to be more accepting of diversity and tolerant of differences although prejudice is often more subtle
- Baldwin refers to these as MICROAGGRESSIONS and describes BENEVOLENT INTOLERANCE
what is benevolent intolerance?
ingroups behave differently towards outgroups and justify this as a kindly attempt to support people with a perceived lower status
- e.g. giving money to a homeless person but not wanting a homeless shelter on your street.
what would lead to reduced prejudice?
the focus of cultures onto fairness rather than competition should lead to reduced prejudice and discrimination
- the minimal group studies were redone in Polynesia
collectivist cultures are more likely to be fair
what is a strength of the culture affecting prejudice view?
it is supported by research evidence
- replicated minimal group studies
- Orpen notes that F-scale scores were not significantly correlated with prejudice in a group of white south-african ppt however measures of SOCIAL CONFORMITY showed significant correlations
HOWEVER - this was done on 16 yr olds
