Personality
Individuals predisposition to behave in a certain way
Attitudes
A complex mix of feelings, beliefs and values that predisposes someone to behave towards something in a consistent way
Motivation
Internal mechanisms and external stimuli which arouse and direct our behaviour
Arousal
Intensity of motivation, state of alertness ranging from deep sleep to excitement
Stress
Describes negative feelings a person experiences in a potentially threatening situation
Eustress
Positive form of stress which people actively seek to test their ability to the limit
Anxiety
Negative form of stress which can lead to an increase in arousal and a potential decrease in performance
State anxiety
Emotional reaction of someone in a situation that they experience as threatening
Trait anxiety
A personality trait giving a tendency to react to situations in an anxious way
Aggression
Intent to harm someone outside the rules of the sports event
Assertion
Forceful behaviour within the laws of the sports event
Social facilitation
Positive influence of others who may be watching or competing on sports performance
Social inhibition
Negative influence of others who may be watching or competing which leads to a decrease in performance
Evaluation apprehension
Arousal levels rising due to perceiving those present to be evaluating or judging your performance
Trait
Underlying enduring predisposition to behave a certain way every time a situation occurs
