How is neuroticism linked to addiction?
Neuroticism is linked to low self-esteem
Neurotic individuals may use addiction as a form of self-medication.
Sinha (2001) - neuroticism
Stress plays a role in initiation of addiction and in risk of relapse. If an individual is more susceptible to stress, then they may feel that they need the addiction to overcome stress.
Baumeister (1997) neuroticism
Low self-esteem may lead people to act in a manner that is self-defeating. May use their addiction to avoid negative feelings about themselves.
