1
Q

Zero Loss Yield Analysis

A

Comparing what we buy to what we sell
Compare material input to useful output: Using existing documents allows high-level yield analysis without the need for new sensor installation
Determine material flows from existing business data: Estimate volume and value of waste flows, to investigate existing records and uncover all waste within a process
Uncover improvement opportunities: Discover top-priority causes of rework and scrap using a problem-solving approach, reduce inventory stocks through improved supply chain management
Eliminate constraints on performance: Putting all waste streams into the overall business context enables targeted improvement action and investment, in proportion to available value

Q

Calculation

A

Yield = design mass of material per unit * no. of units sold / total raw material purchased

Different calculation for each material
Raw Material Purchased (mRM): Purchase invoices used to determine all products shipped to customer in relevant timeframe
Raw Material Inventory: Decreases in RM inventory included in mRM for calculation, Increases in RM inventory not included in yield calculation
Finished Product Inventory: Decreases in FP inventory excluded from PSold for calculation, Increases in FP inventory not included in yield calculation
Valuation & Business Case Development: Total opportunity is value of material consumed (mRM) but not shipped to customers, Business case viability is determined by 10-25% of total opportunity, compared with cost of intervention

Q

Sustainability by Design

A

This concept involves being able to deliver the same value to the customer (in terms of product performance) with reduced material consumption. This requires:
Careful examination of customer requirements
Comparison of product performance to requirements
Careful examination of product design to see whether it can produce the required performance with lower material consumption
Steps of tool:
Identify functional unit(s) of performance of the product
Determine customer, regulatory or other minimum requirements for performance
Determine the minimum material required to delivery the required performance
Compare to current performance & determine the opportunity for material saving
