The 1967 Referendum

Eddie Mabo
Fought for land recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island. He bought the case to the high court of Queensland in 1992 and won. Introduced Native Title law.
Native Title
Recognition in Australian law that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have rights and interests in their land that derive from their traditional laws and customs.
What has improved due to the movement
Lots of progression since the movement. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have received much more recognition and a voice. Less racism and segregation and the ending of the Stolen Generations. Gradual steps towards reconciliation.
What hasn’t improved from the movement
There is still lots of racial discrimination in modern society. Still are gaps between education rate, life expectancy, employment, imprisonment rates, smoking, and population proportion.
Changes made as a result of the movement
Inclusion in population census, given land recognition, abolishment of Stolen Generation, racial discrimination banned in 1975.
Purpose of The Freedom Ride
Bills House of Representatives repeal section 127 but not 51 of the constitution. Campaign for equal pastoral wages. Extensive media coverage brought lots of attention to the matter.
Purpose of the Stolen Generations
Aboriginal children were removed from their families to be assimilated in European culture and live like white Australians. Thought their actions were righteous and they were protecting and educating them.
Tent Embassy results
Police ordered to remove protestors but used excessive force. Protestors received lots of support and coverage bought lots of attention.
