A

Inspired by African American Civil Rights movement in US. Organized by group of students, led by Charles Perkins. Brings attention to racism in NSW towns. 1965

A

The 1967 Referendum

A

Changed the constitution so Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples would be counted as part of the population and Commonwealth would be able to make laws for them. 90.77% of Australians voted yes. Gave them a voice.

Eddie Mabo

A

Fought for land recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island. He bought the case to the high court of Queensland in 1992 and won. Introduced Native Title law.

What has improved due to the movement

A

Lots of progression since the movement. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have received much more recognition and a voice. Less racism and segregation and the ending of the Stolen Generations. Gradual steps towards reconciliation.

What hasn’t improved from the movement

A

There is still lots of racial discrimination in modern society. Still are gaps between education rate, life expectancy, employment, imprisonment rates, smoking, and population proportion.

A

Inclusion in population census, given land recognition, abolishment of Stolen Generation, racial discrimination banned in 1975.

Purpose of The Freedom Ride

A

Bills House of Representatives repeal section 127 but not 51 of the constitution. Campaign for equal pastoral wages. Extensive media coverage brought lots of attention to the matter.

A

Aboriginal children were removed from their families to be assimilated in European culture and live like white Australians. Thought their actions were righteous and they were protecting and educating them.
