Composite Indicators
Compiled of a number of single indicators that forms an index, which helps to measure multi-dimensional concepts such as poverty.
Consumer Price Index (CPI)
A weighted basket of typical goods and services that are bought in the economy by the typical family
Used to measure changes in inflation.
Ecological Footprint
A measure of the amount of land needed to support a population
A model used to estimate the demands that a human population places on the environment.
Gender Inequality Index
Measures gender inequality in a country through the lenses of reproductive health, empowerment, and economic status.
Gini Coefficient
A measure of distributions of income in an economy used to measure levels of inequality.
Green GDP
GDP that has been corrected for loss of biodiversity as a result of economic activity, and the monetary costs of pollution and climate change.
GDP
Total monetary value of all final goods and services produced within an economy in a given period of time.
GNI
Total income of a nation’s people and businesses.
GNP
Total monetary value of all final goods and services produced by factors owned by the country’s citizens in a given period of time.
Happy Planet Index
A composite indicator that aims to show how well countries are doing at achieving long, happy, sustainable lives through:
- Longevity (life expectancy)
- Inequality
- Subjective well-being
- Ecological Footprint
Human Development Index
A composite indicator measuring:
- Health (through life expectancy)
- Education (through mean and expected years of schooling)
- Standard of living (through GNI per capita at $PPP).
Inequality Adjusted Human Development Index
A composite indicator that measures health, education and standard of living, and whose indicators are adjusted to account for inequality within a country in those dimensions.
Infant Mortality
A measure of the number of children younger than one year that die annually for every 1 000 born alive.
Life Expectancy at Birth
A measure of the average number of years that a person may expect to live from the time they are born.
Mean years of schooling
The average number of years of education received by people aged 25 and older in their lifetime
Component of the HDI.
PPP
Compares economic productivity and standards of living between countries on the basis of relative costs of goods and services.
Single Indicators
A single indicator is one factor, such as GNP per capita, used to measure a single development characteristic of a country.
Adult Literacy Rate
A measure of the percentage of the population older than 15 years that is literate at a specific moment in time.
Credit Rating
Measure of a country’s creditworthiness, which means its ability to pay back a loan.
Expected Years of Schooling
The number of years of schooling that a child of school entrance age can expect to receive in his or her lifetime if current age-specific enrolment rates persist.
