220,000 people.

Tens of thousands.

What were the primary effects?
Over 220,000 deaths. Tens of thousands injured. 2 million displaced Towns and villages swept away. Infrastructure destroyed.
What were the secondary effects?
Disease.
Damage to economies which were based on farming, fishing and tourism as people lost crops, boats and hotels were destroyed.
Food shortages.
What were the short term responses?
People fled to high land. International aid sent. £450 million was pledged within a week. Troops used bulldozers to create mass graves. Grief- many people died.
How much money was pledged within a week?
£450 million
What were the long term responses?
Rebuilding of homes/infrastructure.
Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) spent £40 million on rebuilding in Sri Lanka and Indonesia.
A warning system is now in place n the Indian Ocean.
