What is the raga?
A
A set of notes, usually between 5 and 8.

A
A long-necked string instrument, which usually has 7 strings.

A
Similar to the sitar but with 4 strings.

A
A pair of drums.

What is a drone?
A
A harmonic of homophonic effect or accompaniment where a note or chord is continuously sounded throughout the entire piece.

What happens in the Alap?
A
It has no pulse. Improvised sections on Sitar and Tambura drone.

What happens in the Jhor?
A
It’s a little faster than the Alap. Starts to have a clear pulse.

What happens in the Jhala?
A
It’s a lot faster. Players improvise around the melody.
