What kind of coexistence was there between Hindus and Muslims and why?
Uneasy- the positions of strict neutrality adopted by the Raj.
What did both Muslims and Hindus believe they had?
That they had equal rights to carry out whatever religious practices that were relevant to them. [regardless of offence]
What was the Indian National Congress and when was it formed?
It was formed in 1885, political party.
What was the membership like in the INC?
Representatives from every province of British India [only 2 Muslims]- never felt easy.
Mostly middle class [Brahmans]
What was the population of Muslims in the INC in 1894?
83/600
What was the INC’s goals and objectives?
Change India rule.
Govt. to expand the opportunities for Indians to work in the legislative parts.
What did the INC want to focus on more of?
Internal improvements rather than the military.
Why was it bad that the INC wanted to focus on internal improvements rather than military?
-India is under the rule of the British who already have significant rule.
-India is outnumbered by their military compared to Britain.
-Made them more vulnerable to threats.
How did the INC approach their goals?
Radical demands and cooperation.
What would you call the INC’s overall strength before WW1?
Exceptional amount of power= representation from all over India.
What was the Muslim League and when was it formed?
All Indian-Muslim party, 1906.
What was the ML membership like?
Early years- predominantly Muslim.
Overtime- expansion to the urban middle class.
Nearly in every state, Muslims were minority.
What was the ML goals and objectives?
To protect Muslims interests in India.
Give a voice to the Muslim community.
How did the ML approach their goal?
Loyalty to the British Rule.
Jinnah’s leadership.
Opposition to Congress.
Separate electorates e.g to safeguard Muslim representation.
What would you describe the ML’s strength like before WW1?
Lesser- didn’t have much of a say.
