Independent Suspension Flashcards
What are disadvantages of beam axle suspension?
- Vehicle axle is limited by the clearance between the axle and engine
- Camber angle is altered if one wheel hits the road bumps causing wheel shimmy
- Deflection of the leaf springs alters castor angle
- High unsprung weight - maximum wheel adhesion is not obtained
What are the three common types independent suspension?
- Double wishbone
- Double link and radius rod
- MacPherson strut
What spring medium does MacPherson struts use?
Helical Coil
What aspect must be taken into account when setting up a suspension system?
If the vehicle is FWD all suspension components must be clear of the drive shaft and its components
What are advantages of Independent Front Suspension (IFS)?
- Improved ride comfort
- Better road holding
- More accurate steering
- Reduced steering wobble
- Increased passenger space
What are disadvantages of equal length wishbone?
- Varied track, Constant camber
- Unstable vehicle and increased tyre wear
How is the castor angle maintained in a double wishbone strut?
By mounting the top wishbone slightly behind the lower wishbone
Because double link and radius rod cannot take longitudinal dynamic loads and braking torques, what needs to be in place?
Semi-Trailing Radius Rod
What 2 types of universal joint are there?
- Plunge
- Non plunge
What additional advantages does IRS have over IFS?
- Improved ride comfort
- Improved traction on RWD vehicles
- Handling is enhanced
What is a transverse link?
A link that travels sideways
A 1 piece track rod is unsuitable for IFS, so what can we use?
3 piece track rod
