Independent group design Flashcards
Independent group design
Each participant is tested on one condition
3 types of independent group designs
- Random assignment (Random groups design)
- Matching (matched group design)
- assignment by nature i.e gender, right-handedness etc (natrual groups design)
Blockrandomization
Every group has at least one person for each condition and the order of the condition is randomized.
5 threats to internal validation
-Intact groups
-Irrelevant conditions
-Selective “cancellation” (people quit experiment)
-Demand characteristics (when the participants use cues in the environment to understand what is expected of them)
-Experiment leader effect
Zero hypothesis
When you suppose the result would’ve happened without your independent variable
Confidence interval
A way to calculate if an independent variable has had an effect
p-value
the value that comes from calculating the probability of the result being random
Cohens d =
the difference in means between two conditions / average variability of participant’s scores
Used to calculate effect size.
0,2 small
0,5 medium
0,8 large
Inferential statistics
used to see if an independent variable has a reliable effect on the dependent variable
