Increased Intracranial Pressure (ICP) Flashcards
What is Monroe-Kellie hypothesis?
B/c of limited space in the skull, an increase in any 1 component of the skull (brain tissue, blood, CFS) will cause a change in the volume of others.
What is the normal ICP range & how is it accomplished?
0-10 mm Hg
By shifting or displacing CSF
What can cause an increased ICP?
Disease or Injury
What does increased ICP do to the body?
Decreases cerebral perfusion
Ischemia
Cell death
(further) edema
Herniation is the result of what?
Brain tissue shifting through the dura.
What is ‘Auto-regulation’?
The brains ability to change the diameter of blood vessels to maintain cerebral blood flow.
What role does CO2 have in Increased ICP?
Decreased CO2 results in Vasoconstriction
Increased CO2 results in Vasodilatation
