Anterior Cord Syndrome
MOI: compression, damage to ant. part of SC or ant. spinal artery
–> cervical flexion
Sx:
Loss of motor fxn
Loss of pain and temp
Tracts:
Corticospinal
Spinothalamic
Central Cord Syndrome
MOI: Compression, damage to central portion SC
–> cervical hyperextension
Sx:
UE > LE
motor > sensory
Tracts:
Corticospinal
Spinothalamic
Dorsal columns
Brown-Sequard’s Syndrome
MOI: hemisection of SC, stab wound
Sx:
Paralysis
Loss of vibratory & position sense (ipsi)
Loss of pain & temp (contra)
Tracts:
Corticospinal and dorsal columns
Lateral spinothalamic
Posterior Cord Syndrome
MOI: compression of posterior spinal artery
Sx:
Loss of proprioception
Loss of 2-pt discrim
Loss of stereognosis
Motor fxn preserved!
Cauda Equina Injuries
- Injury below L1 level
- Complete or incomplete
- Considered peripheral nerve injury
Sx:
Flaccidity
Areflexia
Impairment of bowel/bladder fxn
Full recovery not typical - distance needed for axonal regeneration
