Q

What is a homoclinal landscape

A

The landscape is formed from inclined strata that have been tilted at the same degree.

Q

How do homoclinal ridges form

A

The form from alternating sedimentary rock (diff resistance) that have been uplifted by warping, folding, or faulting

Q

What is the difference between a dip slope and a scarp slope

A

A scarp slope is the steep side of an escarpment. It experiences more erosion. While the dip slope is the more gentle side, there’s is less erosion.

Q

Briefly explain the erosion on the scrap slope (not scarp retreat)

A

The side is eroded by sheet wash and mass wasting. Recession due to undercutting (removal of base rock that causes overhanging rocks to fall) occurs

Q

Explain homoclinal shifting

A

The scrap slope’s position moves in the direction (towards) the dip slope.

Q

Identify and explain the different homoclinal landscapes

A

the angle of inclination depends on the inclination of the resistant rock

1) Cuesta- The angle of inclination of a cuesta is between 10°-25°. The dip slope is therefore gentle and the scarp slope is steep.
2) Homoclinal ridge- The inclination is 25°-45°. The difference between scarp and dip slope is less.
3) Hogsback- The angle of inclination is 45°+. The difference between dip and scarp slope is very little

Q

Name and briefly explain the 2 landforms on a cuesta

A

1) Cuesta dome- Circular landform that forms from erosion on an Anticline. The scarp slope faces inwards while the dip slope outwards
2) Cuesta basin- landform that forms from erosion on syncline. The scarp slope faces away from the center and dip slopes face towards it.

Q

Give a few examples of uses for a cuesta

A

1) Dip slope can be used for forestry
2) Cuesta valleys can be used for farming
3) Basins can hold artesian water (underground water)
4) Domes can contain oil and natural gas

Q

Examples for uses of a homoclinal ridge

A

1) Poorts (gaps between mountains by river erosion) can be used to build transport routes
2) A dam wall/dam can be built between poorts/gaps
