Inbau Flashcards
Reid test
Inbau developed an approach where a mass of information is presented to a suspect in attempt to ‘persuade’ them to confess, leading them to believe that they had no other choice
Step 1
Direct confrontation - told they have committed offence
Step 2
Offered chance to shift blame - by offering other justifications for what may have happened
Step 3
Suspect is never allowed to deny guilt
Step 4
They give reasons as to why they couldn’t have committed the crime - ignore, leads to learnt helplessness meaning they will give up trying
Step 5
Reinforce sincerity to ensure that the suspect is receptive by staying close.
Step 6
Suspect will go quiet and listen more , suggest alternatives and infer guilt
Step 7
Pose ‘alternative question’
Which gives two choices to what suspect could do- one will be more socially desirable but both answers will be admitting their guilt
Step 8
Admit guilt in front of witness
Step 9
Document their admission and sign confession to avoid them contracting later
