In General Flashcards
Linear line system
1) Extraction
2) Production
3) Distribution
4) Consumption
5) Disposal
Why the linear line system is unrealistic?
No theoretical system interacts with
- environment
- society / culture
- economy
- people / government / company
Why is the linear line system in crisis?
It is not possible to keep it alive on a finite planet. Picture is limited to a certain view.
Natural resource explotation
- trashing, destroying the earth and its inhabitants
- running out of resources, use is too heavy
- water, animals, forests, metals; to the point where the planet is suffering
- people don’t have value until they consume
Toxic chemicals
- are used in or are a result from production and its resources
- they pollute land, water and air
- they built up, effect health and contaminate the food chain
4 factors why toxic chemicals are harmful in production in regards to the workforce
- factory workers have highest chance of getting exposed to toxins
- people are forced and often have no other option then to work in these industries due to destoyed environment
- explotation / people are used as resource
- releasing toxins / pollution, often overseas effecting people in the environment
What are “externalized costs”?
- costs for resources not considered in accounting
- environment and people pay for it with a loss of healt, explotation, their natural resources and no education
Golden era “consumption” -
- people think of being consumers
- people shop constantly
- often not used, goods get trashed after 1 year
- materials throughput is incredibly high
- consumption is designed as a ritual, ego- or spiritual satisfaction
- Goods have planned or perceived obscolescence
- advertisment as mechanism to convince
- people don’t perceive the cycle and effects on others
Planned obscolescence of products
- designed not to fit future products or modern components
- produced with a shorter life-time
Perceived obscolescence of products
- value is put into looks, fashion, modern trends
- good is just bought for prestige, image or social status
What to do against pollution?
- getting rid of landfills and bruning facilities (high pollution, high effect on climate change)
- recycling
- reducing waste in production
- use materials made for recycling
- use non-toxic materials
Conscious consuming
The way to reflect on the supply chain of our products consumed and how they effected the earth, humans and animals. Being aware of climate change and explotation. Decide if you want to be part of it.
Stop wasting
Abolish throw-away mindset
Sustainability for companies
- green chemistry
- green / clean production
- fairness / equity
- closed loop production
- use of renewable energy
- labor rights
