An Allusion
an allusion is an unexplained reference to someone or something outside of the text.
Anadiplosis
when a word or phrase at the end of the sentence or clause is repeated at the beginning of the next sentence or clause
Anaphora
repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of several sentences or clauses
epigraph
An epigraph is a short quotation, phrase, or poem that is placed at the beginning of another piece of writing to encapsulate that work’s main themes and to set the tone.
exposition
Exposition is the description or explanation of background information within a work of literature.
foreshadowing
Foreshadowing is a literary device in which authors hint at plot developments that don’t actually occur until later in the story.
figurative language
figurative language focuses on the use of figures of speech that play with the meaning of words, such as metaphor, simile, personification, and hyperbole.
Colloquial Language
speech/writing with a lack of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and usually contains slang
External Focalisation
a narrative perspective where the story is told from a viewpoint outside of any character’s thoughts or feelings, presenting only observable actions and details
Focalisation
focalisation is the perspective from which a story is witnessed
Minor Sentence
an incomplete sentence that still makes sense
Imagery
refers to descriptive language that engages the human senses:
Visual imagery (sight)
Auditory imagery (hearing)
Olfactory imagery (smell)
Gustatory imagery (taste)
Tactile imagery (touch)
