Q

What is sclerosis?

A

increasing amount of bone, laying down of bone

osteoarthritis

creates radiopaque

when fixing a break, a callus is what is left over after sclerosis

Q

What is a sequestrum?

A

piece of dead bone

non articular: not associated with a particular joint

blunt force trauma

avascular

infection

cannon bones

carpus and tarsus down is the most common area for the sequestrum

it takes 2-3 weeks for a sequestrum to show up on radiograph

A

associated with joints, intraarticular (IA)

Q

What is condylar?

A

articular fracture

thoroughbreds get in on the lateral side and the left bone gets more impact

treat with screwing the two pieces back together

Q

What is capsulitis?

A

inflammation of joint capsule

17
Q

What is arthritis?

A

inflammation of the joint

18
Q

What is osteoarthritis?

A

inflammation of the joint with bone involvement (OA)

also known as degenerative joint disease (DJD)

19
Q

What is arthroscopy?

A

less invasive surgical procedure on a joint

to see inside a joint with a camera

2+ portals - camera and instrument

20
Q

What is arthrotomy?

A

opening up the joint to see what is wrong with it

gross visualizatoin

21
Q

What is osteochondritis dissecans?

A

osteochondrosis: has to do with the mineralization of the cartilage

cartilage transforming to be bones when the horse is growing

22
Q

What is osteochondrosis?

A

failure of bone to ossify

23
Q

What is OCD?

A

osteochondritis dissecans

24
Q

What is SBC?

A

subchondral bone cyst

25
Q

What is ankylosis?

A

when the horse shuts down joints

the vet will want to speed up the process of this

chemical injection (ethyl alcohol): increases the overall inflammatory response to a crazy degree to speed up the process

drilling/screwing: creates so much destruction that it increases the inflammation in the joint to heal

26
Q

What is arthrodesis?

A

surgically closing the joint

27
Q

What is an osteophyte?

A

bone spur

laying down more bone on top of bone

new bone within a joint

28
Q

What is an enthesiophyte?

A

new bone associated with soft tissue structures at their origin or insertion

looks like a bone spur but is outside of the joint

29
Q

What is an avulsion?

A

piece of bone pulled off by soft tissue

30
Q

What are shorter limbs caused by?

A

these happen when a horse fractures a proximal limb bone

all of the muscle associated with the area

they fracture and then the bones shift and shear next to one another
