Improvised Explosives & Incendiaries Flashcards
All of the mixtures of IEDs and incendiaries are made up of what?
A fuel and an oxidizer.
A fuel is defined as what?
Providing heat or power by burning.
An oxidizer is defined as what?
A substance that furnishes the oxygen for the burning of the fuel.
What are some safety considerations when dealing with chemicals and mixtures?
1) Remember many chemicals are toxic through inhalation, ingestion and absorption.
2) Never eat or drink around them.
3) No smoking around them.
4) Static precautions should be followed.
5) Wear non-permeable gloves when handling.
6) Wear aprons, masks and other specialized equipment.
7) Medical/safety and fire fighting equipment should always bo in hand when working on or disposing.
Describe an Improvised Explosive?
Nothing more than a combination of a fuel and an oxidizer that when mixed can be made to explode or detonate and can be made to burn over a period of time.
What are the two forms of Chemical Reaction Bombs?
Acid and Caustic.
What is a common device made by juveniles?
Chemical Reaction Bombs and Dry Ice Bombs.
Describe a Dry Ice Bomb?
Dry Ice and water are placed into a container. As the dry ice evaporates it yields carbon dioxide gas resulting in pressure build up.
Describe a Self Igniting Molotov Cocktail?
A glass bottle containing gasoline and Sulfuric Acid is ignited when the liquid comes in contact with Potassium Chlorate and sugar mixture on the outside of the bottle when broken.
What is an acid bomb?
Utilizes a toilet bowl cleaner that contains Hydrochloric Acid (Muriatic Acid) as the active ingredient with aluminum foil strips.
What is a Caustic Bomb?
Utilizes Sodium Hydroxide (lye), water, and aluminum foil strips. Unlike the acid bombs the lye is a alkali base. The chemicals react to form hydrogen gas and build up pressure. Another type uses Chlorine tablets/granules and rubbing alcohol.
Name some chemical mixtures other than chlorates and nitrates?
TATP (Triacetone Triperoxide) - made of hydrogen peroxide, acetone and citric acid and is extremely sensitive to heat, shock and friction.
HMTD (Hexamethylentriperoxidediamin) - made of Hexamine , citric acid and hydrogen peroxide and is extremely sensitive to heat, shock and friction (even wet).
How many chemicals exist that can be used in improvised explosives and incendiary devices?
Literally thousands.
Black powder consists of what?
potassium nitrate, charcoal and sulfer.
Name some Chlorate mixtures?
- Potassium Chlorate and Sugar (inited by spark)
- Potassium Chlorate and Petroleum Jelly (poor mans C4 - needs blasting cap)
- Potassium Chlorate and Red Phosphorus (extremely sensitive to heat, shock and friction - must be mixed wet)
