What are the 9 Bomb Squad responsibilities?
a) To take disposition and render safe all explosives and incendiary devices inside the City of Phoenix
b) To take disposition and dispose of explosives found, or abandoned in the City of Phoenix

The Bomb Squad will provide trained personnel and equipment to?
Handle and dispose of improvised explosive and incendiary devices, old explosives and explosive chemicals; to handle or investigate bombs, bomb threats, and conduct post-bomb scene investigations.
Describe the OJT for new unit detectives?
Each Detective will work along side the training detective for a period of 12 weeks. After successful completion of the formal training period, new detectives will be placed with other season detectives in the unit for one-month periods for familiarization and exposure to different styles of work.
What special licensing is required of new unit detectives?
Specialized Commercial Drivers License within 6 months. The city will provide the DOT physical, 16 hour CDL preparation course, MVD written exam and biannual DOT medical exam for renewal.
How often is the call-out roster updated and who receives a copy?
Each quarter it is completed by a unit detective, approved by the sergeant and sent to the unit lieutenant, commander, duty commanders, Communications Bureau administrative supervisor and the VCB Desk.
Detectives assigned to callout will?
- respond and arrive to callouts in the centralized Phoenix area within one hour.
- not work off-duty jobs unless they can comply with this one hour requirement.
- arrive at the scene wearing the authorized tactical uniform and have all necessary equipment for the call.
What stipulations are placed on Bomb Squad personnel and tactical scenes and what is the primary assistance provided?
Bomb Squad personnel will maintain perimeter positions during an operation and will make entry after the location is rendered safe of suspects and will locate and render safe explosive materials and transport such materials away from the tactical scene.
What are the minimum staffing requirements of the unit?
Supervisor, one senior technician, a backup technician and a canine handler and also take into account staffing when on-duty technicians are on special details outside of the city.
Can a Bomb Squad Sergeant be substituted for an operational Detective in order to meet minimum staffing?
No
The unit will maintain two response trucks, each containing specialized equipment including?
- remote controlled robot
- Bomb Suits (Med-Eng EOD 8 and SRS 5 search suit)
- X-ray machine
- PAN disrupter
- Draeger and Scott SCBA
- Galvanometer
- 35mm and digital cameras
- laptop computer
- rigging equipment
- miscellaneous hand tools
When will the response truck respond?
Any situation involving a Bomb Squad call-out.
What responsibilities does the standby detective have in regards to the response truck?
- maintain the truck and it’s contents to assure it’s readiness for any tactical callout.
- immediately report any to the sergeant any problems
- remedy any problems prior to a callout
How often is an inspection completed on the response trucks and what in particular is looked for?
Monthly and documented on an inspection sheet. Particular attention is given to pieces of equipment requiring batteries (galvanometers, 35mm cameras, remote controlled robots and x-ray machines.
What must detectives know/do in regards to specialized equipment?
be familiar with shelf-life and wear-out limitations and submit replacement requests to the sergeant in a timely manner allowing for replacement with no loss in service.
How often is specialized equipment inspection?
Monthly for equipment designated for use in unusual occurrence situations.
