Improving The Accuracy Of Eyewitness Testimony Flashcards
The Cognitive interview (CI)
A method of interviewing eyewitnesses to help them retrieve more accurate memories.
The Cognitive interview (CI) 4 techniques
- Report Everything
- Reinstate the context
- Reverse the order
- Change perspective
Report everything
Witnesses are encouraged to include every single detail of the event, even though it may seem irrelevant or the witness doesn’t feel confident about it. May trigger other important memories
Reinstate the context
Imagine the environment and their emotions. Related to context dependant forgetting
Reverse the order
Events should be recalled in a different order from the original sequence. Prevent people reporting their expectations of how the event must have happened rather than reporting the actual events.
Change perspectives
Witnesses should recall the incident from other people’s perspectives Disrupt the effect of expectations and also the effect of schema on recall.
The Enhanced Cognitive interview (ECI)- Fisher
- Developed additional elements of the CI to focus on the social dynamics of the interaction
- Eg. the interviewer needs to know when to establish eye contact and when to relinquish it
- Includes reducing eyewitness anxiety, minimising distractions, getting witnesses to speak slowly and asking open ended questions
Evaluation points for the cognitive interview on improving the accuracy of eyewitness- Support for the effectiveness of CI
STRENGTH
CI produce 41% more accurate recall than standard interview
Evaluation points for the cognitive interview on improving the accuracy of eyewitness- Some elements may be more useful
LIMITATION
Report everything and reinstate the context used together produced best recall
Evaluation points for the cognitive interview on improving the accuracy of eyewitness- The CI is time consuming
LIMITATION
It takes longer and needs special training, full CI not realistic for police
