What are the requirements of primary impressions?
Should accurately record clinically relevant landmarks of the edentulous mouth without excessive tissue distortion

“Should record the entire functional denture bearing area to ensure maximum support, retention and stability for the denture during use
What are primary impressions used for construction of?
Special trays
Why would you modify primary impressions with putty or wax?
To ensure essential landmarks are covered
To include full functional sulcus
What does the us of a special tray allow for?
Reining of tray adaption to a resorted or awkwardly shaped ridge
What should you do prior to taking a secondary impression?
Check the fit and placement of the tray
Where should the special tray be relieved around?
Frenal attachments
What should a working impression record?
The depth and width of the functional sulcus and appropriate flange depth and width
What ares can be marked on the impression?
The impression border can be marked to indicate sulcus depth and relief areas
If fibrous flabby ridge is not severe what technique can be used to take impressions?
If not severe, a single stage imp can be used with perforated tray and low viscosity material
Aim to record the area without displacing the tissues
What is the two stage impression for a more severe flabby ridge?
Mucocompressive imp of the non-compressible tissues
Mucostatic of the fibrous area(s)
Essentials for impressions taking:
Impression accuracy is essential for successful denture construction
Check the fit of the tray BEFORE loading with impression material
Rehearse tray insertion before loading
ALWAYS support the tray during impression recording
Remove the entire unsuccessful impression before retaking
Remember:
Stand in front of the patient for lower imp
Stand behind the patient for upper imp
