REALISM
• Courbet defined art as “representation of objects which the artist can see and touch,” “abstract object, invisible and nonexistent, does not belong to painting”
• Illustrate contemporary life as is
• Flat, dark palette, not posed compositions
• Show lower class, believed they were just as important as royalty
• Political agendas
• Objective, no emotion, no imaginary beings

  1. Courbet used his “Pavilion of Realism” to assert his independance form the saloon
  2. artist become independent - acadamy doesn’t dictate whats good art
