is a movement which first became popular in visual art community.
What did painters do?
endoverded to depict experiences, moods and movement rather than specific scenes and stories.
What year did this era start and end?
1870-1910

What composers to be introduce to this era?
Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. There ideas then spread throughout Europe and the USA.

Was admited to the Paris Conservatory at age 11

What did Impressionist artist play?
Vocal music far less frequently than composer of previous eras. The atmospheric quality was better with instrumental music.
Was instrumental music common?
It was more common than vocal music. They left traditional form like solo piano and orchestra for the prelude and ballet.
What are the styles?
Rhythm, Pentatonic scales, textures.
What was Rhythm?
more flexible allowing more freedom
What was pentatonic scales?
contain 5 notes instead of the usual 8 and whole tone scales
What are Textures?
Textures were much thinner in impressiosm music and tended to feature one instrument or a group of instrument at a time.
