Important structures and functions Flashcards
Module 3 (3.2.2)
Arteries
Thick-walled vessels carrying blood away from the heart, with elastic tissue and smooth muscle
Arterioles
Smaller vessels branching off arteries, feeding blood into capillaries
Capillaries
Smallest blood vessels for metabolic exchange, one cell thick
Venules
Intermediate vessels between capillaries and veins
Tissue fluid
Liquid containing oxygen and nutrients, facilitating substance exchange between blood and cells
Veins
Thin-walled vessels carrying blood to the heart, with valves to prevent backflow
Hydrostatic pressure
Pressure created by blood flow, forcing fluid out of capillaries
Osmotic pressure
Pressure pushing fluid back into capillaries due to solute concentration differences
Lymphatic system
Network carrying lymph fluid, filtering waste and aiding immune defenses
Lymph nodes
Structures filtering bacteria and foreign material from lymph fluid
