Important principles in biology Flashcards
what is a biological principle?
theories that are supported by a wide variety of evidence and are unlikely to be found untrue.
define living.
can move, responds to stimuli, can grow, reproduce, contain materials and food from environment
what is cell theory?
all organisms are made up of cells (and products of cells)
All cells come from preexisting cells
The cell is the smallest organisation unit
what are common features of cells?
cell membrane
Cytoplasm
DNA and genetic material
what is diversity?
their similarities and differences
what is evolution?
the changing or organisms over Tim based on diversity, fossil records, geographic distribution, DNA and genetic code and sequencing and comparing DNA between species
what are characteristics of organisms?
Movement Reproduction Sensitivity (respond to changes in environment) Growth Respiration (extracting energy) Excretion Nutrition Are made of cells Show changes and are often adaptive
what are common requirements for life?
Energy
Nutrients and water to grow and repair
Certain environmental conditions
Release toxic wastes
what are adaptations? what can cause them?
features that allow organisms to thrive in their environments. Adaption is due to natural selection- individuals with features most suited are more likely to survive to breed and pass down their desirable traits
