IMPORTANT!!! Periodic Table Arrangements (major groups and properties, trends/patterns) Flashcards
The metals in the periodic table
- Alkali metals
- Alkaline earth metals
- Transition metals
- Rare earth metals
Non-metal groups in the periodic table:
- Halogens
- Noble gases
What group(s) are/is Alkali Metals a part of?
group #1
What group(s) are/is Alkaline Earth Metals a part of?
group #2
What group(s) are/is Transition Metals?
groups #3-12 (10 middle groups)
What group(s) are/is Halogens in?
group #17
What group(s) are/is Noble Gases in?
group #18
Properties of Alkali Metals
- All have 1 valence electron
- Extremely reactive with air and water
- Soft and lustrous
Properties of Alkaline Earth Metals
- Have 2 valence electrons
- Reactive with oxygen (i.e. flammable)
Properties of Transition Metals
- much less reactive than groups ONE and TWO
- Hard, dense, many are good conductors of heat and electricity
- Can be mixed into alloys (mix of metals)
Properties of Halogens
- Have 7 valence electrons
- “salt-formers” - readily combine with metals to form salts (ionic compounds -reactive with group #1)
Properties of Rare Earth Metals
- Not actually rare
- In the annex of the bottom table
Properties of Metalloids
- Exhibit both metallic and non-metallic properties
Properties of Noble gases
- Full orbital (stable)
