What did John Hunter contribute?
Changed ideas about anatomy in 1700s, experimented on himself with gonorrhoea.
What did Edward Jenner contirbute?
Developed a vaccine based of the idea of a link between cowpox and smallpox. Rejected by many doctors who preferred inoculation.
What Did Louis Pasteur Contribute?
Pasteur proved there was germs in the air, published germ theory in 1861.
What Did Robert Koch Contribute?
Built on Pasteur’s work, linked many viruses and illnesses to certain microbes, identified causes of many poplar illnesses (anthrax, tuberculosis).
Surgery in 18th to 19th century
Robert Koch was a German war surgeon, the first x-ray machine 1895, chloroform discovered by James Simpson in 1847.
Importance of James Simpson
Discovered the effects of chloroform by chance. Was unpopular until queen Victoria gave birth using chloroform.
Importance of Joseph lister
Carbolic spray on instruments and bandages.
Saved a boy who snapped his leg using it 1865.
Edwin Chadwick importance
Suggested that government should pass laws to improve drainage and sewage systems, funded by local taxes.
John Snow importance
Showed there was a connection between cholera and the contaminated water pumps.
The Great Stink
To reduce the stink, Joseph Bazalgette was assigned in 1859 to rebuild a new sewage system in London.
