Important definitions for WA2 Flashcards
Define average speed
It is the total distance travelled per unit time taken
Define Speed
Speed is the change of distance per unit time
Define velocity
It is the change of displacement per unit time
Define acceleration
Acceleration is the rate change of velocity
Define uniform acceleration
Uniform acceleration is a constant rate change of velocity.
Define what a force is
A force is either a push or pull that one exerts on another object
Define Newton’s 3 laws
1st Law: His first law states that every object will continue in its state of rest or motion in a straight line unless a resultant force acts on it
2nd Law: His second law states that when a resultant force is exerted on an object of a constant mass, the object will accelerate in the direction of the resultant force. The product of the mass and and acceleration gives the resultant force
3rd Law: His 3rd law states that for every action, there is always an equal and opposite reaction.
Define Friction
Friction is the contact force that opposes or tends to oppose motion between in contact
Define inertia
Inertia of an object refers to the reluctance of the object to change its state of rest or motion, due to its mass
Define mass
Mass is the amount of substance in a body, and is constant
It does not change with its location or shape
Define gravitational field strength
Gravitational field strength is the gravitational force acting per unit mass
Define gravitational field
It is a region in which a mass experiences a force due to gravitational attraction
What is the weight of an object?
The weight of an object is the gravitational force acting on it.
