Seven year War - global war between Britain and France regarding land
1756-1763
Royal proclamation
1763 - crown officially responsible for indigenous people and must respect their land
Quebec Act
1774- French civil law used for private matters in Quebec, Catholic people able to run for office again
Act of Union
1840- united upper and lower Canada into one province of Canada. representative government recognizes principles of responsible government
Confederation
1867- Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, and Ontario form a country SEPARATE from England- forming the British North America Act (now the constitution act)
Statute of Westminster
1931- British imperial law is no longer binding in Canadian law. However, Canada still needs royal permission to amend their constitution
Patriation of Constitution
- introduced the constitution act 1982, including the Canadian charter of rights and freedoms. Canada gains the ability to amend their own constitution & has their own bill of rights (1960)
Bill of rights
1960- protects Canadians and their federal rights. NOT binding, often narrow interpretation in law. Ex, the bliss case
