Important Cells Flashcards
neutrophil
aka PMN (polymononuclear)-type of granulocyte; initial respondents to acute injury; main phagocytic cells in bacterial infections
lymphocyte
usually associated with chronic inflammation; T-cells and B-cells; per Pat, usually seen with viral infections
macrophage
engulf foreign material and cellular debris; located outside of circulation; involved in granuloma formation in chronic inflammation
eosinophil
type of granulocyte; associated with allergic reaction or parasitic infection (acute or chronic); contain enzymes like antihistamine and major basic protein (which kills bacteria and parasites)
basophil
type of granulocyte; tissue derivative=mast cell; vasodilation and vascular permeability (via production of histamine and seratonin; mast cells play a role in allergic reaction and parasitic infections
platelet
hemostasis; producers of chemical mediators for inflammation and coagulation: seratonin, histamine, platelet activating factor and thromboxane A2
