IMPORTANT Flashcards
What is important to remember in a pelvis/Hip examination
LMP
what happens day 1 of the menstrual cycle
bleeding begins as the uterus lining sheds
what happens day 6 - 11 of the menstrual cycle
uterus lining thickens in prep for implantation of fertilised ovum
what happens day 11 - 14 of the menstrual cycle
hypothalamus stimulates pituitary gland to release hormones that act on ovaries, stimulating ovulation (around day 14), the uterus continues to thicken - if conception occurs then uterus lining prepared for implantation, if not then theres a drop in hormone levels causing uterine lining to breakdown and shed MENSTRUATION
what are the risks with irradiating a conceptus (growing foetus)
number of cells is small and they’re not specialised therefore the effect of damage would most likely be failure to implant or undetectable death of the foetus, therefore malformations are unlikely or very rare
why could radiation exposure in early pregnancy not result in malformations
because organogenesis (organ development in foetus) starts at 3-5 weeks post-conception
what is the main risk with irradiating in early pregnancy
death of conceptus - but this would require a foetal dose of >100mGy and ado/pelvis exams are average 1.4mGy therefore the risk is not viable
What is the attitude taken towards a missed period
pregnancy is considered until proven otherwise
