importance of Lucknow pact Flashcards
congress had agreed to Muslim demands
the Lucknow pact was important to Muslims because the congress had agreed to Muslims demand of rights to separate electorates and higher percentage of seats for the first time which the Hindus had opposed earlier. Hindu recognised the Muslims as separate political entity and the issue of the Muslim representative was lifted which paved the way for montford reforms hence this their demand of separate electorates and higher percentage of seats was accepted and was guaranteed to the Muslims that no law against their interests would be forced further the Muslims were pleased as they were promised greater provincial autonomy would benefit them
congress concessions to the Muslims
further, the congress give Muslims 3 concessions to their advantage e.g no non-official bill affecting their position would pass if three fourth of Muslims members opposed it. moreover, the congress acceptance of the league as sole representative of Muslims reduced the congress to an organisation of Hindus
Hindu-Muslim unity/Jinnah status
the Lucknow pact was the formed due to Jinnah efforts to promote Hindu-Muslim unity due to which he was given the title of ambassador of Hindu-Muslim unity which was rightfully deserved, this raised the status of Jinnah as a political leader who knew that the Muslims could organise themselves for political action
exposed that congress was not the sole representative for all the communities of India
lastly, the Lucknow pact exposed that congress was not the sole representative of the communities of India as it was claiming to be. this pact showed their was existence of two parties for different communities hence the Lucknow pact debunked the myth that it was sole representatives of the communities and was the most significant achievement as for the first time the Muslims were recognised as a separate party and representatives for the Muslims.
