Priming: Definition; 2 examples

A

A process whereby subjects show improved performance on tasks for which they have been subconsciously prepared.

Examples: Jacoby & Witherspoon (1982): explicit word list task followed by second task of a quickly flashed word; participants were able to identify those words that had been in the first test better than novel words, independent of whether they could explicitly recall having seen them in the first test.
