implicit bias
An socially learned, automatic and not deliberate set of beliefs about a particular group of people that can lead to stereotyping.
stereotypes
fixed, oversimplified, and distorted ideas about categories of people. (perceived as a negative thing)
stereotype threat
the fear that one’s behavior will confirm an existing stereotype of a group with which one identifies. impacts performance.
identity threat
When an individual feels that their social identity is devalued or perceived negatively. (internal cause) impacts performance.
identity contingency
Identity contingency - circumstances you must faced that is directly tied to your identity - feeling of exclusion, feeling of something bad will happen, feeling not accepted by the group (anticipate others doing something bad) (cause is external)
identity safety
idea we create safe place for all identities despite facing identity threats
critical mass
enough minorities in a setting to positively influence to contingency, enough people to allow policy changed (e.g. Sandra Day O’Connor being first woman on the supreme court justice, women represented)
