A sense of oneself as male or female. Involves process of self reflection
Gender expression
1The ways that we learn to communicate our gender identity through our appearance, dress, and behavior.
Gender binary
the “non-material” socially constructed idea that only two types of people- male bodied ppl who are masculine, and female bodied ppl who are feminine - social consequences if one try to violate (binary itself is not biological)
Intersex
People born with a reproductive or sexual anatomy that doesn’t fit the typical definitions of female or male.
one who is born in this medical condition assigned a gender (mostly arbitrarily)
transgender
a diverse group of people who experience
some form of gender dysphoria
gender dysmorphia
not feeling comfortable (actual health impact) because of mismatch between assigned gender at birth (no power to do for themselves)
non-binary/gender queer
identify self outside of the binary (e.g. two-spirit Indigenous North Americans) /being between the binary
gender fluid
without fixed gender identity
drag
conventionally gendered men and women who dress up and behave
like members of the other sex, usually for fun or pay. manipulate bodies to be masculine/feminine at will
cisgender
Male- and female-bodied people who comfortably identify and express themselves as men and women, respectively.
gender ideologies
shared beliefs of how men and women should be, assessment oriented
gender norms
Beliefs and practices about gender that are well known, widely followed, and culturally approved
gendered institution
a social institution in which gender is used as an organizing principle
institution
a persistent patterns of social interaction aimed at meeting the needs of a society that can’t easily be met by individuals alone.
