Q

What’s the difference between IDF and MDF

A

An intermediate distribution frame (IDF) is a free-standing or wall-mounted rack for managing and interconnecting the telecommunications cable between end user devices and a main distribution frame (MDF). For example, an IDF might be located on each floor of a multi-floor building routing the cabling down the walls to an MDF on the first floor. The MDF would contain cabling that would interconnect to the phone company or to other buildings

Q

What is the purpose of a server rail

A

It holds servers and lets you slide them out so that they can be maintained.

Q

What is the name of the device that distributes the connection throughout the building after a demarc point

A

a customer-premises equipment or customer-provided equipment (CPE) is any terminal and associated equipment located at a subscriber’s premises and connected with a carrier’s telecommunication circuit at the demarcation point (“demarc”).

Q

What is a vertical cross connect

A

The routers/switches that take the backbone connection vertically up or down to other floors. A horizontal cross connect is to the same floor.

16
Q

What is a cable drop

A

This takes place at the end of a run. It’s where the cable comes down from the roof and to the walljack / computer.

17
Q

What are three wiring issues you could face after implementing a run

A

Interference
Signal degradation
Improper termination

18
Q

What does a wire map do

A

Tests termination

19
Q

What can multi meters test within an ethernet cable

A

Continuity

20
Q

What is the purpose of a Time domain reflectometer

A

To find breaks in ethernet cabling

21
Q

What is NEXT and FEXT

A

Crosstalk either happening at the sending end or receiving end of a bad ethernet cable

22
Q

What is attenuation

A

Signal getting weaker as it carries on.

23
Q

What is the delay between a frame being sent and received called?

A

Latency

24
Q

What unit of measurement is used to measure signal loss in networks

A

dB

25
Q

What two physical problems can fiber connectors have that could impede their performance

A

Dirty connector, likely smudged by fingers, or misaligned contacts.

26
Q

What is dispersion

A

A signal slowly spreading out over time

27
Q

You plug a third party transceiver into a cisco switch and the plug fits just fine, but you get no connection. You know the connector is good. What are two potential reasons why it won’t work?

A

Switch is not compatible with transceiver

Different wavelengths between cable and what the switch expects

28
Q

What is port aggregation / link aggregation

A

Using multiple NICS for one system to increase bandwidth.

29
Q

What is the other name for link lights

A

LED status indicators

30
Q

What do the two link lights usually show

A

Connectivity, speed, activity.
Connectivity is usually a solid light
Activity is shown via rapid blinking when there’s activity on the network
Speed is shown through different coloured LEDs

31
Q

Why can’t you always trust physical link lights

A

The connectivity link light only shows if two devices are connected, not that the connection itself works. Even then, you can have issues where one side of a cable has a connectivity light and the other doesn’t. Always check both the PC and switch’s link lights for a more accurate image of what’s happening.

32
Q

A system has no connection. You see both the connectivity link lights are on but you still can’t get the pc to see network resources no matter what you do. You start to suspect the cable is the issue. What device can you use to verify?

A

Time domain reflectometer can detect breaks in cable

33
Q

What does a fox and hound do

A

Locates specific cables

34
Q

What is IPV6 SLAAC

A

stateless address autoconfiguration is when IPV6 hosts configure their addresses without the use of DHCP. They will generate an address, then use neighbour discovery protocol to make sure no one else has that address already.
