Slow calcium loss rates through resistance & weight bearing exercises (yoga, walking)
Arthritis
Prevent joint trauma through ROM exercises, swimming, cycling, stretching, target throwing games, creative movement, relaxation exercises, heat applications and avoiding sitting or bed rest for long periods of time
Spina Bifida
Promoting postural alignment, upper torso strengthening, weight management.
Prevention of pressure sores, skin lesions
Exercise includes strength training, archery, swimming, chair aerobics, integrative sports, recreation and play experiences
Osteogenesis Imperfecta
Participate in more social interactions, swimming, ROM exercises and wheel chair activities (competitive sports)
Amputees
Promote physically active life styles. Rom exercises, strength training, energy conservation, endurance training, residual limb care, correct body alignment, activity adaptations and community recreation
Poliomyelitis
Temperature variation control during activities, formal wellness classes and support group activities that promote high-protein, healthy diets and teach activity level self-monitoring
Orthopedic Problems
Programs that strengthen and stretch involved muscle groups, promote wheelchair sports, help adapt to lifetime impairments, and aquatic exercise. Creative expression activities help as an emotional outlet
Burns and other thermal injuries
Programs incorporating bedside activities to distract attention from pain, ROM exercises, relaxation training, coping skills, family and friends program.
MS
Aquatic activities should be in cool 80-83 degree water, stretching.
Be aware of medication side effects
CP
regular stretching, breathing exercises, sports and music
Clients with spasticity find continuous movements easier
Clients with athetosis find intermittent movements easier
Cancer
excessive therapies like journaling to manage frustration and anger, muscle relaxation and guided imagery, outdoor nature experiences, leisure education
Psychological disorders
Talk in calm tone When goal is obtained TR acknowledges and reinforces it. Emphasize cooperation not completion Avoid winner/loser labels State things in positive terms Offer voices for expression
Abused children and teens
outdoor activities
enhance self-esteem, sharing emotions, cooperative/problem solving behaviors/ expressive arts, stress management, relaxation, coping skills
Use play therapy
