Implant Symposium Flashcards
What is an implant?
Surgically implanted medical device in either mandible or maxilla, which aid in the replacement of missing teeth
What is osseointegration?
Direct bone anchorage to an implant body, which will provide a foundation to support a prosthesis
Able to transmit occlusal forces directly to bone, not connective tissue
What MH should be considered before implant placement?
Bisphosphonates
Immune suppressant drugs
- steroids
- chemotherapy
- immune suppressants
Radiotherapy
Antiplatelet
Anticoagulant
What local considerations must be made before placing implant?
Height of available bone
- distance from ID nerve, mental nerve, maxillary sinus
Width of available bone
- distance to adjacent teeth / implants
Thickness of available bone
- medio-lateral thickness
Gingival biotype
Bone biotype and quality of bone
How much distance should be around each implant?
2-3mm top of abutment to CEJ
2mm from implant to adjacent tooth root
3mm from bottom of abutment to blood vessel / nerve
> 7mm CEJ to crown
2 stages of osseointegration?
Primary - implant anchored in bone due to frictional forces
Secondary - functional connection between bone and implant. Titanium is inert so bone heals and grows around implant to integrate it
