Implant placement protocol Flashcards
List the four types of implant protocols
Type 1:
Immediate
Type 2:
Early
Type 3:
Delayed
Type 4:
Late
For the type 1 “immediate” protocol, do the following:
- Define
- Provide advantages
- Provide disadvantages
Definition:
Implant placed right after extraction
Advantages:
• Less surgery required since it is both done at once
• Reduced treatment time
Disadvantages:
• Thin tissue biotype may compromise optimal outcome
• If lack of keratinised mucosa, difficult flap adaptation
For the type 2 “early” protocol, do the following:
- Define (provide timeframe)
- Provide advantages
- Provide disadvantages
Definition:
Socket is completely covered by soft tissue (4- 8 wks)
Advantages:
• Increased soft tissue volume which enables flap management
Disadvantages:
• Site morphology may complicate placement and anchorage
• Socket walls exhibit varying amounts of absorption
• Treatment time increased
For the type 3 “delayed” protocol, do the following:
- Define (provide timeframe)
- Provide advantages
- Provide disadvantages
Definition:
Substantial bone fill of the socket (12- 16 wks)
Advantages:
• Substantial bone fill of socket facilitates implant placement
• Mature soft tissue enables flap management
Disadvantages:
• Adjunctive surgery may be required
• Socket walls exhibit varying amounts of absorption
• Treatment time increased
For the type 4 “late” protocol, do the following:
- Define (provide timeframe)
- Provide advantages
- Provide disadvantages
Definition: Healed socket (more than 16 weeks)
Advantages:
• Clinically healed ridge
• Mature soft tissue enables flap management
Disadvantages:
• Large variations present in available bone volume
• Treatment time increased
