Impingement Syndrome Flashcards
1
Q
What is impingement syndrome?
A
Where the tendons of the rotator cuff (predominantly the supraspinous) are compressed in the tight subacromial space during movement producing pain
2
Q
Presentation of impingement syndrome
A
Painful arc between 60 to 120 degrees of abduction
Pain radiating to the deltoid and upper arm
Tenderness below the lateral edge of the acromion
Hawkins-Kennedy test recreates the patient’s pain (internally rotating the flexed shoulder)
3
Q
Causes of impingement syndrome
A
Tendonitis subacromial bursitis
Acromioclavicular OA with inferior osteophyte
A hooked acromion rotator cuff tear
4
Q
Treatment of impingement syndrome
A
NSAIDs Analgesics Physiotherapy Subacromial injection of steroid Resistant cases = subacromial decompression surgery
