1500-1800
Europeans establish colonies in America, India, Southeast Asia, Africa and China
European Power was limited
Describe New Imperialism
1870-1914
Industrialized nations of Europe (and later the U.S. and Japan) became more aggressive in expanding into other lands
Focused mainly in Asia & Africa
What did the Economy of Europe need?
Need raw materials for factories (industrial revolution)
New markets to sell their goods
Place for growing population to settle
What was the Political Mindset of Europe at the time?
More land = more power
Military bases in colonies meant power and security
Nationalism, pride in country – wanted to be strong
What was the Social System like?
Missionaries spread Christianity
Spread western civilizations, thought western ways were best (racial superiority)
“moral duty” to educate people in other nations (White Man’s Burden)
