Cultural- missionary trips
Economic- New markets, cheap labor, competition w/the rest of the world
Military- build navy (mahan), defend shipping lands
Political- Gain power and compete with other countries
What was the annexation of Hawaii?
Overthrew government with missionaries & annexed it ( we “stole” it)
Hawaii is important because it is a launching point, had great natural resources, very strategic, and had a very big role in WW2
Why did Cuba rebel against Spain?
Cuban revolutionaries wanted independence, Spain brutalized Cubans/ concentration style camps, Cuba had no political representation, high taxes
What is the Panama Canal?
A major trade route, US held very important, made everything faster and more efficient

America’s support the ongoing struggle by Cubans and Filipinos against Spanish rule
