Qing dynasty
The current and final chinese dynasty at the time of imperialism in china - sparked a lot of conflict and was heavily disliked by chinese citizens
Boxer rebellion
A period where the “boxers” started a rebellion in northern china. They wanted to remove all westerners and the Qing Dynasty from china.
Opium wars
The british sent opium into china, getting them addicted. The british then used this to trade opium with china in exchange for resources. This caused china’s economy to plummet whilst the british thrived. At the end of the wars, the Qing emperor stopped trade with britain to retain china’s stability.
Treaty of Nanjing/Nanking
A treaty signed by the Qing and the british to end the opium wars.
Taiping Rebellion
When lower-class chinese citizens had were greatly mistreated and exploited, they rebelled against the Higher class and Qing emperors.
Tongzhi Restoration
A “hundred days’ reform” established by china after losing the sino-Japanese-war to japan due to their underdevelopment. The goal was to modernize china by adopting European-style practices and laws.
Exterritoriality
Immunity to local laws in a certain area, usually due to diplomatic negotiation.

A significant center of global finance and the country to win the first opium war against china

a country or area in which another country has the power to affect developments despite having no formal athority.
