treating someone unfairly compared to others
what is race discrimination?
- have distinct characteristics based on skin colour, nationality or ethnic group
- asking for race classification
what is culture discrimination?
- group of people who share the same customs, language & beliefs
- cultural groups percieved by others as different are more likely to be discriminated against
what is disability discrimination?
physical or mental imparement that has long-termnegative effects on a persons ability
what is social class discrimination?
- economic or educational status grouped into hierachal social categories
- some people have unfavourable views of others due to social class
what is age discrimination?
negative perceptions about older people being frail or confused
what is gender discrimination?
whether someone is male, female or transgender
what is sexual orientation discrimination?
whether someone is bisexual, gay, lesbian etc
what is religion discrimination?
a person’s religious needs not being met
what is direct discrimination?
intentionally treating someone unfairly based on differences
what is indirect discrimination?
accidental discriminatory effect caused by a rule, policy or practice
what is physical abuse?
causing physical pain or threatens to hurt an individual
what is verbal abuse?
name calling, insults or swearing to try to humiliate someone

threats & constant criticism to undermine & control a person

unwanted sexual contact

fail to meet a persons basic needs
what does prejudice mean?
negative attitude towards an individual or group of people
what is stereotyping?
making judgement about individuals or groups of people based on prejudice
what is labelling?
identify people negatively as a part of a particular group
what is bullying?
range of negative behaviours that can intimidate or harm individuals

how does discrimination affect individuals?
- affects physical, intellectual, emotional & social well being
- lead to health problems & social exlusion
what is disempowerment?
- lack control over own lives & decisions
- loss of motivation to participate in decision-making
what is low self-esteem & low self-confidence?
- internalise negtive beliefs, resulting in reduced self-worth
- prevent individuals from seeking out or engaging in social & educational opportunities
what is poor health & wellbeing?
- avoid seeking medical assisstance, leading to untreated health issues
- stress can weaken immune system
effects- not eating, malnutrition, fatigue
what is unfair treatment?
- individuals do not recieve access to services
- unequal access to high-quality care
- lead to social exlusion & sense of injustice
what is poor mental health?
- leads to mental health issues like depression & chronic stress
- lead to more severe mental health issues
- effects- loss of confidence, suicidal, feel worthless
what are other effects of discrimination?
- feeling worthless
- self-harm
- frightened
- malnutrition
