Impact On Industry Flashcards
Why is technology developed ?
To improve quality and speed of making whilst maintaining customer satisfaction
What is automation ?
The use of automatic equipment in production
When did automation first appear ?
The Industrial Revolution, with machinery being used to complete tasks previously done by humans
What are automated machines programmed to do ?
Carry out a procedure multiple times
This could be creating the shape of a car door using a press
What are the advantages of automation ? ROLLL
- Repeats the process fast and can run 24 hours
- Opportunities for higher skilled workers
- Less chance of human error
- Less waste
- Lower running costs
What are some disadvantages of automation ? Think RENT
- Reduces employment workforce which can effect local economy
- Expensive to set up and fix
- Needs maintaing
- Training needed to work machines
What are some examples of automation through new technology ? CCC
- Computer aided design and manufacture enables really accurate work
- Computerized stock control can automatically find, deliver and reorder materials as they are needed
- Communication systems can allow people and machines to communicate instantly around the world Eg smart phones and tablets
What is the difference between robotics and automation ?
Robots use artificial intelligence (AI) to collect information and improve performance
Why are robots popular ?
Their ability to increase efficiency and handle harmfull materials that humans can’t; however, they are very expensive
What are the advantages of robotics ?
- increased efficiency - can work at a constant speed without tiring
- can handle harmful materials
- more precise
- faster speed
What are the disadvantages of robotics ?
- very expensive to set up and repair
- need constant power
- loss of jobs
- training needed to supervise them
What is smart technology ?
Technology that uses a chip to store information
What has smart technology done ?
Improved efficiency of buildings with many factories now using renewable energy sources to try and minimize environmental impact
What are modular buildings ?
A building made of smaller prebuilt parts out together
Why are modular buildings good ?
They can be erected quickly and at low cost
And improvements in stock control mean less storage space is needed
