1868 - despite enfranchised more than one million of the working class the conservatives lost the next general election
British political system
With more than 2.46 million voters it became almost impossible to use corrupt means to achieve votes and therefore parties recognised the importance of campaigning e.g the 1868 election members of the liberal party maintained a more active attempt to influence voters by speaking all over the countries
More diverse electorate
Vote was extended to more of the urban skilled working class since the voting population grew to 1/3 of adult males. Power shifted towards largest section of society such as the larger cities of Manchester and Liverpool rather than the wealthiest
Evaluation of diverse electorate
Large areas in the midlands and the northern were still under represented in comparison to the southern counties and property still determined franchise in the counties

1872 allowed secret ballots

Established what a candidate could spend on election expenses and what the money could be spent on
1884 parliamentary reform act
Created a uniform franchise in both county and borough - almost 18% of the population
1885 redistribution of seats act
Gave growing towns the right to send more MPs to parliament and a redistribution of 142 seats took place which cut the old dominance of southern England
