What were the push factors from the south for African Americans
The KKK, disenfranchisement, segregation due to Jim crow laws.
What were Jim crow laws.
The laws segregated public facilities, schools, housing and workplaces, white ones were always better.
What were pull factors to the north.
WW1 increasing demand for workers, factory owners advertised promising housing, good wages and free transport north.
What were living conditions for Blacks in the north.
They were forced into the worst parts of town called ghettos, over charged for rent, forced to take jobs below their skill level, it was better for some than for others.
what were the consequences of the northern migration.
Black people could gain power due to voting areas, upper class blacks became invested in segregation, black workers displaced white union workers, whites in the south thought every one else was happy with Jim crow.
How did the new deal shift black politics.
Shift from republican to democrat.
Was the new deal colour blind?
No, black new deal workers were moved off of projects in favor of white ones and black agricultural workers were fired for white ones.
How did the new deal help black Americans.
The NRA set minimum wages that were colour blind and due to blacks being more likely to be poor lived in 1/3rd of new low income housing.
