impact forces and safety features Flashcards
what is the effect on the impact force when the impact time is longer?
the longer the impact time, the smaller the impact force will be
what is the impact force equation?
force, F (N) = mass, m (kg) x change of velocity, Δv (m/s) / time taken, t (s)
what is the acceleration equation?
acceleration, a (m/s^2) = change in velocity (m/s) / time (s)
name 3 car safety features
seat belts, air bags, crumple zones
what do seat belts do?
Seat belts stop you tumbling around inside the car if there is a collision. made of eleastic material. increases impact time, decreases impact force
what do air bags do?
Air bags inflate w/ air. increases impact time, reduces impact force. They also act a soft cushion and prevent cuts.
what do crumple zones do?
there’s a front and rear crumple zone. they are designed to crush in a controlled way in a collision. increases impact time, reduces impact force.
