immunology and blood type Flashcards
what is the non-specific defense mechanism?
physical and chemical barriers, inflammatory response, and interferon - act against any foreign substances
acquired immunity
response after exposure -facilitated by lymphocytes (white blood cell)
what are the two types of lymphocytes?
T- cell and B-cell
how to T-cells interact with a foreign substance?
attached directly in cell-mediated immunity
how do B-cells interact with foreign substances?
secrete anti-bodies (anti-body-mediated or humoral immunity)
define antigen
anything when introduced into the body results in a immune response that cause T and B cells to react. can be on the surface of virus or bacteria but also toxins, proteins, or other macromolecules
What is an autoimmune disease?
body cant distinguish between self and invader - start attacking itself
where are antibodies located in the blood?
plasma
what is an antibody?
substance synthesized in self to be protective against some non-self material (antigen)
first step of antigen-antibody reaction (agglutination)
clumping of cells in masses - try and confine or limit spread of an infection
